JFK History essays
JFK History essays John Fitzgerald Kennedy, was the 35th president of the United States. He was the youngest man and the first Roman Catholic ever elected to the presidency. Rich, handsome, elegant, and articulate, he aroused great admiration at home and abroad. His term of office as president was too short, however, to say what his place in history might have been Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. His father, Joseph P. Kennedy was a businessman who became a multimillionaire, head of the Securities and Exchange Commission, and ambassador to Great Britain. Kennedy graduated from Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut. He then briefly attended Princeton University, and then entered Harvard University in 1936. At Harvard he wrote an honors thesis on British foreign policies in the 1930s. It was published in 1940, the year he graduated, under the title Why In 1941, shortly before the United States entered World War II, Kennedy joined the U.S. Navy. He attended a school to learn about the Patrol Torpedo boat. Kennedy was sent to the islands of the South Pacific Ocean where he was in charge of a Torpedo boat, everybody called him Skipper John Kennedy, the boat was called PT 109. The boat had been in battle and and it was dirty. The engines were in need of repair. J.F.K went to work, and soon the PT 109 was ready for war. J.F.K said, "the torpedos would sink any ship on the sea". Near an old pier the PT boats waited every day. When night came, they were ready for war. They drifted out into the ocean and listened for the sound of engines of enemy ships, for three or more nights they did that but they didn't find anything. One night in early autumm four enemy ships had been spotted near an island. The PT boats waited for dark so they wouldn't be seen. Slowly the PT 109 rode the black waves and every man of the crew listened. The crew could here the sou ...

Cartilaginous Fish - Chondrichthyes - Profile
Cartilaginous Fish - Chondrichthyes - Profile Cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes) are a group of vertebrates that includes sharks, rays, skates and chimaeras. Members of this group include the largest and most formidable marine predators alive today such as the great white shark and the tiger shark as well as large filter feeders such as the manta ray, whale shark and basking shark. Cartilaginous fishes have a skeleton that consistsà of cartilage (in contrast to their cousins the bony fish, whose skeletons are made up of true bone). Cartilage is both tough and flexible and ità provides sufficientà structural support to enable cartilaginous fishes to grow to considerable size. The largest living cartilaginous fish is theà whale sharkà (about 30 feet long and 10 tons). The largest known cartilaginous fish ever to have lived isà Megalodonà (about 70 feet long and 50-100 tons). Other large cartilaginous fish include the manta ray (about 30 feet long) and the basking shark (about 40 feet long and 19 tons). Small cartilaginous fishes include the short-nose electric ray (about 4 inches long and weighs 1 pound), the starry skate (about 30 inches long), the pale catshark (about 8 inches long) and the dwarf lantern shark (about 7 inches long). Cartilaginous fishes is that they have jaws, paired fins, paired nostrils and a two-chambered heart. They alsoà have tough skin that is covered with smallà tooth-like scales called denticles. Denticles are similar to teeth in many ways. The core of a denticle consists of aà pulp cavity that receives blood flow for nourishment. The pulp cavity is capped with a cone-shaped layer of dentine. The denticle sits on top of a basal plate which overlies the dermis. Each denticle is covered with an enamel-like substance. Most cartilaginous fishes live in marine habitats all their lives, but a few species of sharks and rays live in freshwater during all or part of their lives. Cartilaginous fishes are carnivorous and most species feed on live prey. There are some species that feed on the remains of dead animals and still others that are filter feeders. Cartilaginous fishes first appear in the fossil record about 420 million years ago during the Devonian Period.à The earliest known cartilaginous fishes were ancient sharks that were descended from bony-skeleton placoderms. These primitive sharks are older than the dinosaurs. They swam in the worldââ¬â¢s oceans 420 million years ago, 200 million years before the first dinosaurs appeared on land. Fossil evidence for sharks is plentiful but consists mostly of tiny remnants of the former fish- teeth, scales, fin spines, bits of calcified vertebra, fragments of cranium. Extensive skeletal remains of sharks are missing- cartilage does not fossilize like true bone. By piecing together the shark remains that do exist, scientists have uncovered a diverse and deep ancestry. Sharks of the past include ancient creatures such as Cladoselache and Ctenacanths. These early sharks were followed by Stethacanthus and Falcatus, creatures that lived during the Carboniferous Period, in a window of time referred to as the ââ¬Å"Golden Age of Sharksâ⬠, when shark diversity blossomed to include 45 families. During the Jurassic Period, there was Hybodus, Mcmurdodus, Paleospinax and eventually the Neoselachians. The Jurassic Period also saw the emergence of the first batoids: the skates and rays. Later came the filter feeding sharks and rays, the hammerhead sharks, and the lamnoid sharks (great white shark, megamouth shark, basking shark, sandtiger, and others). Classification Cartilaginous fishes are classified within the following taxonomic hierarchy: Animals Chordates Vertebrates Cartilaginous Fishes Cartilaginous fishes are divided into the following basic groups: Sharks, rays, and skates (Elasmobranchii) - There are about 800 species of sharks, rays, and skates alive today. Members of this group are known as elasmobranchs.Chimaeras (Chimaeriformes) - There are about 50 species of chimaeras alive today. Members of this group are also known as ghost sharks, spooksharks, or rabbit fish.

The Star Living Mall is a retailer of the products manufactured by Star Furniture (Star Living, 2011). The Star Furniture group has created a unique shopping mall by making the Star Living Mall because of the one-stop furniture that it provides and the range of brands that it houses. The Mall not only specializes in furniture but also provides related services such as furnishing. The clientele of the Mall is primarily based in Singapore. There are four main branches of the Mall in Singapore, selling furniture ranging from that of living room and dining room to bedroom furniture. Moreover the Mall also showcases the four main retail brands of the Star Corporate Group including Mondi Lifestyle, Star Furniture and Zen Tradition (Get Singapore, 2011). Lucano is regarded as the high-end collection of the Star Furniture and has been able to establish itself as a unique brand in the country. The production of the Star Furniture is such that new products are brought in the market every four months. This helps to keep the brands fresh and up-to-date. Besides the four main brands that the Mall features, it also offers a store-in-store boutique that houses a number of brands specialising in the mattresses and beddings. This boutique, known as BEDz Store, along with the other brands featured, offers the customers a complete and comprehensive shopping practice (Star Living, 2011). The target market of the Mall is mostly Singaporeans. The myriad of brands that the Mall displays caters to a large segment of the population due to the fact that the products displayed have different price ranges. This makes the products affordable for the lesser income group. The customers can choose the products that meet their budgets and lifestyles (Get Singapore, 2011). The four brands that the Mall has cater to the four individual market segments that the brands have created in the years since their launch. Moreover the Mall promotes the brand image that the products are both stylish and functional. The target market of the Star Furniture group is the mass market of Singapore and Taiwan (Star Living, 2011). Question 1 (b) The Brand Asset Valuator (BAV) model is an important means of investigating the stature of a brand. The model was developed by Young & Rubicam in order to analyze the value of a brand by looking into the strengths and weaknesses of the brand. The model helps to measure both the stature of the brand as well as its durability. The underlying principle in the model is that these two components are able to draft an image of the brand equity while identifying problems and providing solutions (Iane, King & Russell, 2008). The model assumes that the brands are composed of a progression of four main consumer trends: differentiation, relevance, esteem and knowledge. Differentiation and relevance combine together to give rise to br and strength whereas esteem and knowledge are representative of the brand stature. Therefore the model helps to compare brand strength with its stature. The brand stature shows the current strength of the brand; on the other hand, brand strength shows the capacity of the brand to progress and grow. When analyzing the Star Living Mall, by the Star Furniture group, one has to take into consideration these four factors to establish brand equity.

Promotion of Liberal values by states Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Promotion of Liberal values by states - Essay Example Further it also presents the idea that the spread of liberalism will not necessarily result in shape of complete peace and prosperity in the world. In order to understand the prescribed role of the liberal states by the Liberalism theory it is important to understand the theory. "Liberalism is an ideology, philosophy, and political tradition that holds liberty as the primary political value. Broadly speaking, liberalism seeks a society characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, especially of government and religion, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy that supports relatively free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of minorities are guaranteed. In modern society, liberals favor a liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law and an equal opportunity to succeed." (Wikipedia, 2006) The essential characteristic of the liberal theory of the state is the doctrine of jurisdiction. The liberalism theory emphasizes on the limited area of power and authority for the state. Liberalism provides specified boundaries to the state beyond which the state cannot trespass. The principle of the limited power of state is the characteristic, which signifies the theory of Liberalism from Socialism in which the power of state is unlimited and Anarchists, according to whom the state does not have any significance. According to the neo socialist theory the most important factor is the economic efficiency rather than that of individual liberty and limited government. In order to undertake a discussion of the extent to which the use of power in the spreading the Liberal values is justified we will analyze the principles of Liberalism. The first and the foremost important principle of liberal theory are that the state is not superior to all the institutions. In fact state is also a social institution as other social institutions. All the institutions related to the specified field have relatively more power concerning the field as compare to other institutions. State has its own limitations and boundaries. It has to act in those boundaries. (Cooray) War has remained an issue of concern for most of the countries and nations. The formation of the international institutions such as League of Nations and the UN is the part of efforts of the nations towards establishing peace in the world. But still the notion of war is present in shape of the process of fighting terrorism and intervention to establish democracies. In case of the attack of U.S and its allies at Iraq and the refusal of the United States to follow the suggestion of United Nations to resolve the matter through peaceful talks, denies the first role of the superiority of the institutions on the state. United States used her economic dominance and military superiority in the world to make all the countries, including its enemies and allies to support the decision of war against Iraq through using force. "The second principle of the liberal theory of the state is that the state ought to respect the fault principle." (Cooray) According to the fault principle the state cannot punish an individual or cause him any harm with

Deer Hunting Essay -- Process Essays
à à à à à Many people have misconceptions about hunting. One such misconception is that hunting is easy and any person can go sit in the woods and wait for an animal to cross the hunterââ¬â¢s path. However, people who believe this are sorely mistaken. Hunting is not just sitting in the woods with a rifle; there are many other aspects that must be considered. An individual must have all preparations complete, purchase or gather the equipment needed, and know what to listen for while in the woods. à à à à à First, an individual must get prepared for the beginning of the deer-hunting season. Contact your local parks and wildlife organization to find out the rules and regulations for that particular season, the dates for the season, and bag limits. Once you have gathered this information, go to any sporting goods or hardware store to purchase a hunting license. A combination hunting and fishing license usually costs around $55. In preparing for the season, you also need to find a hunting club or lease. When looking for a hunting club or lease, it is important to find an area that has plenty of hardwoods and a water source; otherwise you will be wasting your time. Now that you have found the club or lease that is right for your hunting needs, there are dues that are owed to your club or lease and the clubs or leases own rules and regulations that need to be gone over. Since, the rules and regulations, club or lease, and license are taken care of, you need to figure out what type of equi...

I woke up with the worst headache ever – Creative Writing
I woke up with the worst headache ever. I could hardly move but I managed to sit up with difficulty. I was in forest. I looked around to see if I could recognise where I was, but I didn't. Then it hit me. Who I was and what I was doing there? How did I get there? Where am I from? What's my name? I didn't know. My heart was thumping and I started screaming but I realised no one could hear me. I saw that a few trees had been burnt, recently burnt. I touched something, something liquid but it was too thick to be water. I went closer to it wondering what it could be I discovered it was blood. There was blood around me but I wasn't bleeding. I didn't get it. As I was trying to get up my leg hit something too heavy to be pushed away. I was on my feet wondering what it was I'd hit. She had dark eyes, black hair, she was beautiful, stunning but had been stabbed in the stomach. It was her blood I had all over my hands, her blood that my clothes had been drenched in. I thought for a while. This couldn't have been what I thought it was. Was I that sort of a person? Well if I was, I knew I had changed. I bent down and closed her eyes but they re-opened and her hand moved. I was so happy, I might not have known her but I was still happy because death is a terrible thing. Then she grabbed my hand in a tight grip, tight enough to get me on my knees. Struggling she put he arms around my neck and whispered, ââ¬Å"Help me please.â⬠Then she fell into my arms. I started to panic. I had some keys in my pocket, and one of them looked like car keys. I kind of guessed I owned a car. I picked her up and started walking. I had no idea where I was going and after twenty minutes I realised I was lost. But I didn't lose hope, I kept on going for I didn't care how tired I was. All that mattered to me was for this girl to stay alive and not to die. About ten minutes later I came to a car park. I was relieved. I took a look at the keys to see what car I had to look for. Within a minute I found the car I as looking for. A jaguar convertible and I was surprised, I expected a ford or a normal non-expensive car. I opened the passenger seat and put her in. I looked at her closely and muttered to myself, â⬠I couldn't have stabbed her.â⬠I sat in the drivers' seat and found a wallet. I opened it and there was a picture of a guy in it. Next to it there was the name Tyler Epps and the address 4208 Link, Connecticut Lane, Maryland, Silverspring. I looked in the mirror and realised that I was the guy in the picture and also had blood on my face. I didn't know whether to drive up or down? East or West? I decided to look for the main road and there might be signs that may help me. When I got to the main road, there were signs and I looked at them and tried to see if I recognised any of the places. I didn't but to my luck I saw â⬠Newn Hospital 1 mile â⬠I was so glad. When I got there a lady at the desk saw me and screamed, â⬠Got a doctor urgently we have a stabbed patient.â⬠I saw nurses rushing. They took her from me and put her on one of those wheely beds. I watched them vanish at the end of the corridor. A lady came to me to go and get my face cleaned up. There was a massive cut around my temple. A very deep one too, so I had been after all. It was really starting to hurt now. I was so shocked and scared before that I couldn't feel the pain. She asked me who she was, but I told her I had no idea. Then all of a sudden there was blankness. I woke up and to no surprise I found myself on a hospital bed. ââ¬Å"Well good morning Mr. Epps,â⬠a lady's voice said to me. I turned to my left and there was a nurse standing beside me. She was injecting me with something. ââ¬Å"This will make you feel better,â⬠she said as she was writing down something on a piece of paper. I didn't bother asking what it was as I could feel it working already. I didn't feel as weak anymore. ââ¬Å"How long have I been here?â⬠expecting her to say at least three hours. ââ¬Å"Since November the 15th sir.â⬠She paused looking too deep at whatever she was writing. â⬠And today is the 17th of November sir.â⬠She then walked out. I couldn't believe it, I had been unconscious for two days. I wondered what had happened to me to cause this. ââ¬Å"Hey Tyler.â⬠I looked up and it was her. The girl from the forest, she was alive. ââ¬Å"The doctors said I'm going to be out of here soon,â⬠she said with excitement. I was puzzled, she was very confident talking to me. Her face rapidly changed to normal. ââ¬Å"Oh, I forgot,â⬠She said sadly ââ¬Å"Forgot what?â⬠For I had no idea what she was going on about ââ¬Å"Well the doctors told me you had lost your memory in the accident,â⬠she said quietly. ââ¬Å"What accident?â⬠ââ¬Å"I guess I will have to start from the beginning.â⬠ââ¬Å"We were going through the forest on our way to the lakeside, when this guy came to us and asked for the direction to the car park. Then all of a sudden he pulled a knife and stabbed meâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ She then took a heavy breath. ââ¬Å"You turned and the knife but just as you were about to pull it out he hit you on the head with something, but I didn't quite see what it was.â⬠She had a tear in her eye. ââ¬Å"So, who are you?â⬠She could be my cousin, my best friend, I had to know. ââ¬Å"I'm Kyla, your girlfriend,â⬠she smiled. ââ¬Å"Girlfriend, whoa I can handle that.â⬠I didn't know what else to say, I had a girlfriend and I didn't even remember her. Then again I could see why she's my girlfriend. No doubt she was a beautiful girl and she seemed like a nice person. The nurse came back, â⬠Mr Epps, I've got good news. Your condition seems to have healed rapidly, therefore you can go home in two days, but we will have to run a few tests before that, just to be sure.â⬠ââ¬Å"That's good news, we get to go home together,â⬠she said getting all excited again. ââ¬Å"Home? Together?â⬠I was still confused. â⬠Yeah, we live together.â⬠ââ¬Å"Weâ⬠¦live together?â⬠ââ¬Å"Tyler I'm your girlfriend you know and the least you can do is sound to surprised.â⬠She was angry. ââ¬Å"Well I am sorry, it's just that I don't even know myself and everything is moving too quick,â⬠I said slowly and calmly. â⬠I am sorry too, it's just that I'm not used to seeing you like this.â⬠â⬠Doesn't it feel good to be home?â⬠ââ¬Å"I don't remember home, but it sure does feel better thin that hospital.â⬠My house as massive, so I kind of figured out that I was rich. I owned a jaguar and a massive house. Living with Kyla was great. She took me to see all my friends and family and helped me with all the things I needed to know and do. I proposed to her and she said yes. After about a year, I was gaining my life back, getting re-adapted to the worlds and living with Kyla. I realised that my life was worth living. I had a great family and a wonderful fiancà ¯Ã ¿Ã ½e. I really did love her. How couldn't I? She was just perfect for me. She was beautiful, intelligent and never did anything wrong or anything to hurt me. She was the reason I lived. During that year Kyla let out the secret, our secret that nobody could know. We are different from everybody else. Kyla had the ability to control the mind and objects, which was weird but really cool. But as for me I just love fire I am a pyromaniac. It was real cool how I could make fire by looking at things. She told me what happened that night. The night in the forest, a night I could never forget. She has a brother named Camen. His power was to actually get into the anyone's body including animals. He didn't â⬠Erm excuse me, I'm Aaron.â⬠ââ¬Å"Andâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ â⬠I'm Kyla's brotherââ¬

Tda2.1 Child and Young Person Development Essay - 2286 Words
TDA 2.1 Child and young person development TDA 2.1 Child and young person development. 1.1 Describe expected pattern of children and young peopleââ¬â¢s development from birth to 19 years. Birth to one year New-born babies can: * see faces as fuzzy shapes * grasp an object that has touched the palm of their hand * turn their head to look for a nipple or teat if their cheek is touched * suck and swallow * try to make stepping movements if they are held upright with their feet on a firm surface * startle in response to a sudden sound or bright light * stretch their arms suddenly and then bring them in if they feel they are falling * recognise their motherââ¬â¢s voice and smell * cryâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Intellectual development: this is learning the skills of understanding, memory and concentration. Communication and speech development: this is learning to communicate with friends, family and all others. Although development is called different names, it is important to remember that these areas are interconnected and link with one another. There are three basic principles of human development that apply to everyone from birth. 1. Development starts from the head and works down the body. A new baby cannot hold up his or her head alone. Yet, within a few months, the baby will be able to sit alone. This is because control of the spine and central nervous system develops from the top of the head down to the base of the spine. You can see this control developing in a baby as he or she starts to hold the head without support. Similarly, a new-born baby waves his or her arms around vaguely, yet in nine monthsââ¬â¢ time will find the tiniest crumb or piece of Lego easy to pick up with the thumb and finger. This is because the nervous system also develops from the spinal cord out to the extremities (hands and feet). 2. All development happens in the same order, but can occur at different rates. A baby has to hold his or her head up, learn to sit with support, and then without support, before he or she can stand by holding on to furniture and then
